Installation Process
Preparation & Assembly
Before you begin installation, ensure all cabinets are fully assembled and the installation area is prepared.
📋 Preparation Checklist:
- Assemble all cabinet units according to manufacturer instructions
- Clear the installation area of all debris and obstructions
- Check that all cabinets match your plan and are the correct sizes
- Verify all electrical and plumbing work is complete
Marking Out
Use a spirit level or laser level to mark reference lines for accurate cabinet placement.
📐 Key Measurements:
- Mark a level line for the top of base cabinets (typically 900mm from floor)
- Mark a level line for the bottom of upper cabinets (typically 1500mm from floor)
- Locate and mark all wall studs with a stud finder
- Mark center lines for appliances and fixtures
Start with Corners
Always begin installation with corner cabinets. This ensures the rest of the run follows the correct alignment and prevents layout issues.
🔧 Corner Installation:
- Position corner cabinet first and ensure it's perfectly level in both directions
- Use shims to adjust height and level as needed
- Check with spirit level from front to back and side to side
- This is the most critical step – take your time to get it perfect
Base Cabinet Installation
Install base cabinets working from the corner, ensuring each unit is level before moving to the next.
⚙️ Installation Steps:
- Place subsequent cabinets next to the corner unit
- Level each cabinet using shims or adjustable legs
- Clamp cabinets together before drilling pilot holes
- Check alignment as you go to prevent cumulative errors
Upper Cabinet Installation
Install wall (upper) cabinets using a temporary ledger board to support them during fixing.
🔨 Installation Tips:
- Install a temporary timber ledger at the marked height line
- Have a helper support the cabinet while you secure it
- Start from a corner and work your way out
- Ensure cabinets are level before final fixing
Fixing & Securing
Secure all cabinets to wall studs and to each other for a solid, unified structure.
🔩 Securing Process:
- Fix cabinets to wall studs using appropriate screws (minimum 2 per cabinet)
- Use cabinet-to-cabinet screws to join units together
- Ensure all fixings are tight and secure
- Double-check that cabinets haven't shifted during fixing
Panels & Fillers
Install end panels and filler pieces to close gaps and provide a seamless, custom-built appearance.
✂️ Finishing Touches:
- Measure and cut filler strips to fit gaps (if needed)
- Install end panels on exposed cabinet sides
- Ensure panels are flush with cabinet fronts
- Use panel pins or screws to secure in place
Benchtop & Hardware
Complete the installation by securing benchtops and installing all hardware and adjustments.
🎯 Final Steps:
- Position and secure benchtop to base cabinets
- Install handles and knobs according to your template
- Adjust cabinet doors and drawers for proper alignment
- Install push catches or soft-close mechanisms
- Make final adjustments to ensure everything operates smoothly
⚠️ Important Safety Tips
- Two-Person Lift: Many cabinets are heavy and bulky – always use two people for safe lifting and positioning
- Service Check: Verify the location of all electrical and plumbing services before drilling into walls
- Protective Gear: Wear safety glasses when drilling and use stable footing (ladders or platforms)
- Power Tools: Follow manufacturer instructions and use appropriate safety equipment
- Level Start: The most critical step is ensuring your first corner cabinet is perfectly level in both directions
